The journey: Fancy a cuppa?

Elliot • Jun 14, 2019

Everyone loves a brew, right? Mines a coffee. But none of that instant stuff. I often find I have the best conversations over a simple coffee. Throw in some biscuits and it's even better. And yes, I do dunk...

Last month, I shared my story. If you've not watched that already, it's here. You may have already read in my follow up, that the response had been awesome. Well it continues to be. The power to overcome the stigma lies in the ability to have a conversation about this stuff. Normalise it. Take the 'heat' out of the topic as such. So what better way that to grab a coffee (in my favourite mug) and talking it through.

I've been really grateful for people sharing their views and their own stories with me. However, as they've done so, a few themes have emerged. I've paraphrased some of these themes and shared my view on them below. Have a watch, and get in touch, specifically on these three questions:

  1. Have you, or do you identify with these kind of issues?
  2. What stops you from talking about it with others?
  3. What would have to change, for you to feel comfortable to have those conversations with other people?

I'd love to hear what you think. It's really helping me form what this project will look like and how I can use it to support young people to talk about their mental wellbeing more openly. You can use the contact page, or check out our I nstagram , F acebook and T witter pages too. Lastly. feel free to share this anywhere where you think it'll do some good.

Thank you, as always.

Firstly, in addition to sharing the video of the reveal I said I would share details of the JustGiving page that we've set up to raise some funds for The Royal British Legion , The Alzheimer's Society and Mind in his memory. You'll find the page for donations HERE , and I've also updated the original post with the same link. Alternatively, you can click on the charity logo image below.

If you knew my grandad personally his funeral will be held on 25 March 2021 at Sandwell Crematoriu m, although it is likely that Covid-19 restrictions will limit numbers. In lieu of flowers, all we’re asking is that you do what came so naturally to him - Tell those people precious to you that you love them. If you’d like to make a donation to his memory, we will be splitting the proceeds three ways. To the Royal British Legion, the Alzheimer’s Society and of course, to Mind. You can do so by heading to our JustGiving page . For now though, there are plenty of wonderful memories for us to immerse ourselves in. How lucky we are to have them. And how lucky we were to have you; Ron, Ronaldo Longero, Corporal R.S Long, ‘Old Grumpy’... Grandad. Sleep well. We love you.

...we start the task of dismantling her. That's right, the restoration has begun. But here's one last look around before the transformation begins.

With the end of mental health awareness week here in the UK, I wanted to reflect on why I'd chosen to support Mind with this project, and tell you my story too.
